Exerpt from the Book:
That these people would leave their homes, their cultures, their
families, even their languages, and venture into tremendous peril,
risking their very lives, all for the chance to get to the dream of some
faraway country that doesn’t even want them.
Audio excerpt:
My Thoughts:
Lydia's family gets in the cartel's way. She and her son Luca run from their home in Acapulco, Mexico. They leave everything they own and know behind, only to stay alive. This book is about (what it seems) the endless journey of immigrants to the north to the promised land - the United States of America.
The author did a lot of research about the subject, and it is very well written. Narration is very good with a few Spanish inserts and accents.
But I must admit I was not familiar with the backgrounds of the story. At the end of this audiobook, the author explains why she wrote this book and her concerns about it. There are also some critics on the web about the authenticity of this story:
