Excerpt form the Book:
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore—
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—
Only this and nothing more.”
My Thoughts:
An unnamed character (poet) sits in his chamber and reads. He misses his dear Lenore. And, suddenly, there's a knock on his door. He wonders who (or what) that could be.
The Raven is a dark, chilling, and atmospheric poem. This is not the first time I read The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe. I loved this poem in my high school years already. This time, I listened to the audio version on YouTube, narrated by Elliot Fitzpatrick.
I'm aware that Poe later faced accusations of stealing other people's work, and The Raven might be one of them. For me, it doesn't change the fact that whoever wrote The Raven was a genius poet.
About the Author:
Edgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849) was an American writer, poet, author, editor, and literary critic who is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. He is widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism and Gothic fiction in the United States, and of American literature. Poe was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story, and is considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre, as well as a significant contributor to the emerging genre of science fiction. He is the first well-known American writer to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.About the Narrator:
Elliot Fitzpatrick trained as an actor at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, graduating in 2012. Since then he's worked in theatre in the West End and throughout the UK; with Shakespeare's Globe, the Rose Theatre Kingston and Pitlochry Festival Theatre among others. He's also worked extensively abroad in countries including China, Germany, UAE and Singapore.
In 2019 he began to forge a new career path as a voice actor and have since been lucky enough to work on some amazing audiobooks, video games, corporates, audio dramas, commercials and more. He now records from his broadcast-quality Session Booth home studio in South London.
