Excerpt from the Book:
Garrett Lancaster walked to the courtroom podium as television cameras recorded his every move and millions watched the live coverage. The defamation trial of Alexandra Quinlan versus the state of Virginia had captured the attention of the nation. Ever since the night the Quinlan family was slaughtered and the seventeen-year-old daughter was arrested for the murders, the country had been fascinated with Alexandra Quinlan. First, when she was accused of the crime and labeled a sadistic killer. And later, after she was exonerated when evidence surfaced that proved her innocence.
My Thoughts:
This is my second Charlie Donlea novel. The first was Twenty Years Later, and I liked it.
In her teenage years, Alexandra’s whole family was murdered, and she later became a prime suspect. Her photo from that night was all over the news, and that’s how she became known as Empty Eyes. Later she proved, in court, she was innocent, and the police didn’t have any other suspect. This story takes us years forward when Alex leaves the country and later returns with a changed look and name. After many years, she still wants to find the actual killer of her family. Those Empty Eyes includes too many subplots, and those overshadow the main story of Alex. The novel is ok, but nothing special, in my opinion. There was especially one event close to the end (I won’t go into detail because of the spoilers) that was not believable.
About the Author:
Charlie Donlea is the USA TODAY and #1 Internationally bestselling author of SUMMIT LAKE, THE GIRL WHO WAS TAKEN, DON'T BELIEVE IT, SOME CHOOSE DARKNESS, THE SUICIDE HOUSE, and TWENTY YEARS LATER. His new thriller, THOSE EMPTY EYES, will be released in April 2023.
His books have been translated into twenty languages across nearly forty countries. He resides in Chicago with his wife and two children.
He spends a part of each year fishing with his father in the far reaches of Canada, where the roads end and lakes are accessible only by floatplane. These majestic trips to “God’s Country” inspired the setting for his first novel, Summit Lake.
About the Narrator:
While Vivienne is comfortable narrating in nearly every genre, she’s become a go-to for Mystery/Thrillers, Fantasy/Sci-Fi and Literary Fiction. Her non-fiction strengths are Adventure/Nature, True Crime, Social/Political and Memoir. And she’s particularly skillful at 1st person narrations.
