My Thoughts:
Oakland. 17-year-old Kiara and her older brother Marcus live alone. Her brother wants a chance to be a rapper. The problem is that neither of them has a job, and they don’t have money for rent or food. And there is also young Trevor - Kiara’s neighbor. His mother often leaves him in the apartment without food. So Kiara feels she has to take care of him too.I appreciate the story. These are important topics we have to write about and talk about. Of injustices and inequalities. And I can see why this novel has so many good ratings. It was heartbreaking in so many ways. Although... I think the author often tried too hard and wanted this novel to be perfect. So we come across some clichés. Also, I missed some deeper feelings from Kiara. There are some, but I would expect her to feel rage. She was often numb, and I didn’t like that. Like she is the perfect martyr.
But overall, I liked it. It was devastating, sad, and not fair at all. Although a few details bothered me, this is an impressive debut by a young author, and I will pay attention to what Leila Mottley writes next.
