Excerpt from the Book:

It was arduous undertaking. In a city like Naples, inhabited by families with numerous branches that even when they were fighting, even when the fights were bloody, never really cut their ties, my father lived in utter autonomy, as though he had no blood relatives, as if he were self-generated. I had often had dealings with my mother's parents and her brother. They were all affectionate people who gave me lots of presents, and until my grandparents died-first my grandfather and a year later my grandmother: sudden deaths that had upset me, had made my mother cry the way we girls cried when we hurt ourselves-and my uncle left for a job far away, we had seen them frequently and happily. Whereas I knew nothing about my father's relatives.

My Thoughts:

Giovanna lives in a perfect Neapolitan family. Her parents adore her, especially her father. They are educated and relatively wealthy. But one day, Giovanna overhears her father saying she is turning ugly like his sister, Vittoria. She is deeply hurt by this statement but also curious about who her aunt Vittoria is. She knows all the relatives on her mother’s side but no one on her father’s side. One day Giovanna decides to learn more about aunt Vittoria.

Elena Ferrante takes us on the streets of Naples again. I was excited to read another story from this author that takes place in Naples. Although The Lying Life of Adults for me was not as good as the Neapolitan Quartet, it was a very good read in Ferrante’s style.

About the Author:

Elena Ferrante is a pseudonymous Italian novelist. Ferrante's books, originally published in Italian, have been translated into many languages. Her four-book series of Neapolitan Novels are her most widely known works.
