Excerpt from the Book:

Silus settled himself by the treeline, pulling some green branches over himself, and watched. It was hard to make out details from this distance, around a quarter of a mile away, but he could see plenty of activity, and the sound of hammer on metal rang out over the lowing of the cattle gathered in the fort. From his right, the east he thought, a band of warriors twenty strong climbed the hill- The wore cloaks and trousers, but no armour, and carried spears and small round shields. Gates in the palisade swung open to admit them, and Silus was able to glimpse a large number of men inside, with some milling around, some sitting and drinking and some sparring with their spears. Before the gates swung shut again, he had estimated some four hunded. Few were women, and fewer still were children or elderly.

This was a warband. Gathering for a raid.

My Thoughts:

I rarely read this type of books. But, I often watch movies and series exactly like this.

Set in Caledonia, roughly today's Scotland, in the time of Ancient Rome. Silus, a roman scout of mixed roots, doesn’t know what he started when he makes an instant decision.

Emperor’s Sword is a fast-paced historical thriller. It is full of action, rough and ruthless, as life in those times was. Not all the point is in the violence. You can, as I did, enjoy a lot of details about Roman life, settlements, houses, and more. If violent content is a problem for you, I should warn you: there are quite some trigger warnings. There is a lot of blood, violence, gore, and more. So I would recommend this novel to readers who like fast-paced, action-filled historical thrillers and, of course, expect this kind of content.

Excellent narration and accents make this book even better. Performed by David Thorpe. Narration fits this kind of novel, and I think I enjoyed this novel even more in an audiobook form.

About the Author:

I have had a decades long interest in Ancient Roman history, and the Carbo Series (Watchmen of Rome, Bandits of Rome and the short story collection Carbo and the Thief) is the culmination of a lot of research into the underclasses of Ancient Rome. My new series, The Imperial Assassin, is set in the reign of the Severan dynasty which is very under-examined period of Roman history. I am also the author of two veterinary textbooks, Breed Predispositions to Disease in Dogs and Cats and Differential Diagnosis in Small Animal Medicine, both of which have been translated into multiple languages and are in their second and third editions respectively.
